Your AAC Membership at Work: Arizona Helping Lead the National Fight for Medicare Modernization
While the Arizona Association of Chiropractic continues to advocate for its members throughout Arizona, its leadership is also working with national organizations, policymakers, and chiropractic leaders to help shape the future of the profession across the country. It is one of the many ways AAC membership extends beyond the benefits members receive each day.
Today, that work is making an impact.
A Profession United
For perhaps the first time in decades, the nation’s leading chiropractic organizations, including the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), are united behind one common goal: modernizing Medicare coverage for chiropractic services through the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 539 / S. 106).
This legislation would update Medicare’s outdated chiropractic benefit, giving America’s seniors greater access to the care they deserve while recognizing the full value chiropractors provide every day.
The legislation is expected to include important clarifications that:
- Expressly exclude drugs, surgery, and obstetrics from covered chiropractic services.
- Establish Medicare private contracting rights for doctors of chiropractic.
- Provide a clear implementation timeline for modernization.
These improvements strengthen an already bipartisan effort and move the profession closer to meaningful Medicare reform.
Medicare currently recognizes chiropractors for only one covered service, spinal manipulation, a benefit that has remained largely unchanged since 1972.
That means services chiropractors routinely provide, including examinations, evaluations, and other state-authorized components of patient care, remain excluded despite decades of evidence supporting conservative, non-drug approaches to musculoskeletal health.
Modernizing Medicare is not simply about expanding benefits for doctors. It is about giving seniors greater access to evidence-informed, conservative healthcare options while supporting patient choice and improving access to care.
Where We Stand Today
As of July 9, 2026:
- 166 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors of H.R. 539.
- 15 U.S. Senators have co-sponsored S. 106.
- Members of Congress across the country have pledged their support for Medicare modernization.
Continued support from Arizona’s congressional delegation is critical, making grassroots outreach especially important as this legislation moves forward.
